How to get there
While some trails may start with a gondola ride from a major town and have plenty of parking available, many will start in a rural location, with minimal parking.
In addition to it’s plentiful and well maintained trail network, Switzerland is renowned for its reliable and punctual public transport. This will also allow you to undertake trails without having to return to you starting point. Additionally, many villages will have cable car or gondolas from the valley up to the start of the higher trails.
If you are relying on public transport, check the times not only of the bus/train to get you to and from your destination, but also any cable cars that you will need to use. In particular, be sure to check the timetable for the last ride.
Prepare for the unexpected
While detailed route descritions can be obtained from hiking maps, tourist agencies, and websites such as this, be prepared for routes to have changed. For example, storms can cause landslides, avalanches can cover trails or they may be closed due to maintenance or because shooting is taking place. There will usually be well signed diversions in place, but you will not be able to rely on your map.
