Welcome to Hiking with Beer

Hello and welcome to HikingWith.Beer. I’m Jon, a 50 something year old Brit, currently based in Switzerland. This blog is dedicated to my love of craft beer and hiking, and sometimes the two of them combined.

You’ll find posts on different breweries and craft beers, general tips on hiking etiquette and safety, and details of individual hikes together with a review of the beer I took with me on the hike. You can select the different categories and view pages on different beer and hiking related topics from the menu at the top of the page or view our archive for posts on different subjects.

Update March 2023

After a lengthy break due to illness, I am finally planning on re-launching this blog over the next few weeks. Unfortunately, the beer part of the blog will no longer be updated as due to health reasons, I am no longer drinking. But watch out for hew blog posts on hikes and also shorter city strolls from my YouTube channel Jon’s Strolls. I’ll be embedding the videos from the hikes and strolls here, as well as adding photos and a description of the hike.

Picking a hiking route

May 29, 2018 HikingWithBeer Hiking Information, Top Picks

There are a number of factors that can influence how long a particular hike will take as well as how difficult the route will be, and whether it is suitable for children. The difference in height, type of trail (is it a narrow rocky ridge at altitude or a wide paved road between villages) and the terrain all have an impact on the difficulty and time a hike will take. Before undertaking a hike it is important to be sure that it is suitable for your group and the amount of time you have available.

Switzerland is a paradise for hikers from both home and abroad. There are over 60,000km of hiking trails for everyone from the novice hiker (or those with young children) to the experienced, looking for a challenging hike. The trails are all easy to choose and navigate, due to the uniform system of signposts and markers that the Swiss use to mark and differentiate trails.
