Trail Details

Gonzern to Oberegg

Summary: This section of the hike takes us from the start at the car park at Gonzern, down through the meadows and woods to the village of Oberegg.

For the end of June, the weather at the start of the hike was not good, with low cloud obscuring the views and drizzle making for an unpleasant start.

From the sign post at the end of the car park at Gonzern, we follow the gravel track past the first farm buildings, and then keep on the track, going under the ski-life cables, as it becomes a more solid tarmac surface.

Eventually, the track starts to descend past a cluster of 3 buildings, that can be seen below. Just to the right of the third of the buildings, the tarmac track finishes and becomes a grassy path across the first meadow, which we follow until we arrive at a signpost directing us to the left.

Passing through the gate into another meadow, we pass the first of the many plaques detailing the medicinal properties of the locally found plants. In this case Stechpalme (holly).

We carry on down across the meadow and past the buildings of Bürki, and across another meadow towards a small wood.

On reaching the wood, the track turns sharply left and passes through the woods into another meadow. The path here is nothing more than a flattening of the grass, but the signposts in the distance that we are walking towards hint at our general direction.

After crossing the meadow and reaching a gravel track that we also cross, we reach another signpost with a warning attached. The warning sign tells us to listen for the sound of shooting and if we hear it then we should not carry on. Having heard no shots on the approach to the sign or in the few minutes that I was stopped there, I decided that it was safe to carry on. There was another similar sign the other side of the woods.

The sign-post directs us down the side of a wooded area, until the trail markers indicate that we turn left again into the woods, which we make our way through. Emerging from the woods, the path turns left again and descends a series of steps down the side of a meadow.

After descending the steps, we follow  the broken hedgerow, until we arrive at another gravel track. The signpost here directs us to follow the gravel track, whcih after a while turns into a small tarmac road and we get our  first view of the church in Oberegg in the distance. The tarmac road eventually arrives at a T-junction, and we are directed to the right, towards another set of houses.

At the houses, there is another sign post that directs us to the left of one of the buildings and from there, a sharp turn to our left takes us almost back on ourselves as we descend a set of steps to a rougher path that takes us down through a wooded area.

Eventually, we emerge from the wood into the edge of a meadow and a short walk to a tarmac track. A signpost directs us to our right here, across a small wooden footbridge over a stream and then onto a gravel path that runs up the side of a house to the road beyond.

Turning right and walking a short distance, another gravel path leading to some steps can be seen to our right, which lead us up to another road and a short walk to the main road in Oberegg. A signpost directs to turn right, along the main road, which we  eventually cross.
