Kulm to Chrüppel

Summary: This section of the hike takes us from the road at Kulm, up onto the ridge path as it ascends through meadows and woods, until we reach Chrüppel.

At Kulm, we turn almost back on ourselves as we leave the road and join a wide track that leads up onto the ridge path. Passing a wooden bench and passing through a gate, the track initially passes through an area of meadow, giving wonderful views across the valley.

After a while, the track ends and a smaller grassy path makes its way across a final area of meadow, before arriving at a stile and entering an area of woodland. Here, the path, which is now dirt and littered with tree roots and stones, gets steeper as we quickly gain altitude. To our right, we can occasionally, through gaps in the trees, glimpse views of the valley below and Swiss mountains beyond.

Eventually, after a strenuous climb, the woods end and we are out into another open meadow and we continue with a more gentle ascent along a grassy path.

After a while, a simple red and while trail marker painted on a tree directs us off onto a smaller dirt path to the right, before we rejoin the meadow and its grassy path.

Eventually, another stile leads to a further area of woodland and a steeper climb through the trees on a dirt path, followed by another area of meadow and another ascent through a steeper, wooded area, which after a while changes direction, right on to the edge of the ridge.

The path here is narrow and on one side has the cliff-side and on the other a steep drop down. The presence of a hand rail just before the bridge shown in the picture to the right is an indication of how much care needs to be taken at this point.

After crossing the small bridge, the narrow path continues, until it moves away from the edge and climbs back up into a more open area as we approach the small hut at Chrüppel (Kruppel), with its views across Vaduz and the mountains beyond.
