Chrüppel to Wanghöhe

Summary: This section of the hike takes us from Chrüppel, up through the remainder of the wooded area of the ridge and out onto the open high pastures to Wanghöhe.

Leaving Chrüppel, we initially follow another dirt track as it leads through the woodland. In someplaces, it is covered in stones from the remains of rockfalls and in others there are some fairly large rocks and roots to make your way over.

Eventually, the path became much steeper and more rockier as it starts its ascent to Heubäl. This steep ascent starts in the trees, but soon emerges into a more open area giving a wonderful vista of the surrounding mountains and valleys that can be seen in the photographs below.

The area of water that can just be made out in the far distance between the mountains in the second photo is Bodensee (Lake Constance), some 40km away.

After the steep ascent, the trail flattens out and we make our way along the undulating ridge, initially through an area of scrub. The dirt path here is very rocky and care has to be taken not to catch your feet on the jutting rocks and roots that litter the path.

As we pass Heubäl, the trail starts to descend as it makes its way towards Wanghöhe. In places the descent is steep and requires scrambling down areas of large rocks. After the steep descent, the trail levels out in a more grassy area, which made a suitable spot to stop for lunch.

Lunch

For lunch, I paired my usual Swiss cheese, salad and cold meat selection with a glass of Millionaire from craft brewer The Wild Beer Co.

A rich chocolate and caramel milk stout, Millionaire makes a luxurious accompaniment to a simple hiking lunch.

After lunch, re restart the hike, along the grassy dirt path as it meanders along the top of ridge. Most of the way, it is fairly even and easy going, but every so often, a rock outcrop such as the one shown in the picture to the left has to be negotiated.

Finally, after one last rocky outcrop is navigated, the path opens out into a grassy area and the signpost at Wanghöhe can be seen ahead of us, marking the end of this section of the hike.
