July 2018 – Rappenstein (998)

Rappensteinsattel to Alp Valüna

Summary: The next section of the hike takes us down the side of the ridge from Rappensteinsattel, through the meadows past Alp Gapfahl. From Alp Gapfahl, we carry on down into the valley, following the farm tracks until we reach Alp Valüna.

From the signpost at Rappensteinsattel, we initially retrace our steps back down to the trail mentioned previously, which starts us on our ascent down from the ridge into the valley.

The trail down starts as a dirt path that zig-zags its way down the side of the ridge, until it reaches a flatter area, where the trail widens into a dirt and gravel track that makes its way across the pastures.

The track leads down across the meadows towards the buildings of Alp Gapfahl and eventually around the front of them. After passing the buildings, the track becomes a more permanent solid gravel road as it carries on down the side of the ridge towards the valley below.

We continue on this permanent gravel road as the track zig-zags down the side of the ridge, crossing the route of Stage 1 of the Liechtensteiner Panoramaweg, passing the buildings of Waldboda and finally crossing over Valünerbach before joining another gravel road that leads to Valüna.

From this point on, the remainder of the hike is flat as we follow the river back to Steg.

Initially, the road takes us through a mixture of open meadows and woodlands, as we walk past Rüfihütta and back out into the open low level Alpine meadows as we approach Alp Valüna.
