Trail Details
Berghotel Schönhalden to Mädems Hintersäss
Summary: From the summit station, follow the trail over the meadows and through the sparse forest areas until you reach the open moor and Alpine landscape of Fulriet/Mädemsare and the buildings of Alp Mädems, where, if you are lucky enough to find them open, you may be able to buy some delicious Alpine cheese.
The gondola journey takes about 10 minutes and arrives at the summit station, which is attached to Berghotel Schönhalden, which makes a fine place to stop for your morning snack or Znüni.
On leaving the gondola station, you will see the sign post for the trail, which directs you a short distance along a gravel track until a further sign directs you to turn right across the meadows for the initial ascent.
The trail is well marked as you carry on across the meadows until you reach the sparse forest area, through which the trail continues. Spare some time to look back on the short distance that you have walked, with the berghotel in the foreground and the valley and opposite plateau in the distance.

After following the markers through the wooded area, you emerge once again into pastures, with the grassy track continuing more gently upwards and the snow capped mountains of the Pizol region to your left.

Continuing up, you will eventually reach a signpost that gives you two options for reaching Mädems Hintersäs, either by continuing up through the pastures, or by turning to the right and climbing the ridge to go over Guscha.
I chose the former and carried on through the meadows with their pretty Alpine flowers, until the grassy track became a gravel one, leading to the buildings of Alp Mädems, which can be seen below.
Following the gravel track until you reach the buildings, you will see a sign post directing you to turn right for Chammhüttli and on to the second part of the trail, which will be found on the next page.

You can find many more photos from this hike in our gallery, but here are a selection from this section.
