May 2018 – Guscha Gratweg (935)

Mädems Hintersäss to Chammhüttli

Summary: From the buildings of Alp Mädems, the path turns right and heads uphill via the flank to the mountain hut at Chammhüttli. This is the start of the most difficult stage of the hike, particularly with the remains of the snow blocking the trail in places.

From the signpost at Alp Mädems, the trail turns right as it starts to make its way up the flank of the ridge towards the Alpine hut Chammhüttli. Initially, the track is fairly easy going on a rough dirt path, before the route starts to get steeper and the path disappears. In places it is hard to see the trail due to the remaining snow covering it and hiding the trail markers.

As can be seen in some of the photographs below, in places the snow covers the track totally making it necessary to either make a diversion or carefully pick your way across the snow.

The snow was so deep here that the only way past was to scramble over the wall to the left.

This snow field was just about passable with normal hiking boots.

Eventually, after making your way round a final rock outcrop, you arrive at Chammhüttli.

Before moving on to the next section of the hike, spend some time to admire the view from Chammhüttli.
