Bödmeren to Äbenenmatt
Summary: This section of the hike takes us in a generally southern direction, towards Äbenenmatt. The trail initially starts as a small gravel path, before widening out into a gravel track as we pass the first set of farm buildings. When we reach the buildings of Wolfsbüel, we turn left onto a grassy ascent, before the trail becomes more stony once again. A turn to the right takes us again over a mixture of grass and stony areas, before joining another gravel track leading to an area of large boulders to cross. And then a stony and grass track leads us downhill towards the buildings at Äbenenmatt.
We turn right just before the signpost at Bödmeren, to take the small gravel track that heads off in a gentle incline. Following the track, we eventually arrive at a pair of farm buildings and after walking in between them, come to a wider gravel track that leads us off to our right, until we arrive at the buildings at Wolfsbüel.
At Wolfsbüel, a signpost directs us to turn left onto a grassy track that leads us upwards. After a distance, the track becomes more stony, before leveling out as it carries on along the edge of the pine forest. It was here that I found the only obstruction on the entire hike. A tree had fallen during the winter and was blocking the track. Fortunately, it was easy to climb over.
We follow the trail between these two buildings.

The track eventually reaches another sign post, that directs us to turn right to continue the hike. It was here that I stopped for lunch, with the rocks lining the trail making a place to sit and eat.
Lunch
Äs Gäächs is made from the wild hay that is harvested from the steep slopes of Heubrig, and gives this beer a unique taste and also a very light almost hey like colour. The beer is light and refreshing, just the thing for a mid-hike break. |
Turning right at the signpost leads us on to a grassy path that soon gives way to more stones. Care should be taken here as the stones can be slippery when they are wet.
After crossing the stones, the path becomes grassy again as it leads to another gravel track, which we turn left on to. After following the track for a while, through sparse pine trees, we cross a cattle grid and the trail markers direct us off to the right, across yet another set of the slippery stones.
Great care should also be taken here, as not only are the stones slippery, but there are also a number of large gaps between them that are at least 2m deep.
After crossing the stones, we reach a narrow dirt track that leads us down through more of the sparse vegetation until we finally see the farm buildings of Äbenenmatt ahead of us, in the distance. The walk down to the buildings takes us over a grass covered path through a meadow as it descends down towards the buildings themselves.
