Äbenenmatt to Saum
Summary: This section of the hike takes us in a more westerly direction as we head towards Saum. The landscape here is much more open and grassy, with the tracks leading us along the edges of valley until we start our descent towards the buildings at Saum.
From the signpost at Äbenenmatt, we squeeze through the narrow path at the back of the farm buildings and take a grass and dirt track that leads us gently upwards. At the top of the ascent, the landscape opens up into meadows, with trees and bushes dotted around.
The trail here is well marked, with the familiar red and white trail markers painted onto stones leading us across the grass, until we reach a dirt track, running along the edge of a small valley.
After passing through the remains of a gate, the valley narrows, before opening out into a larger valley, with a building in the distance. Again we carry on along a narrow path that runs along the side of the valley.
After walking along the edge of this valley, and past the building, the landscape flattens out to become an area of meadows, with a grass path leading across them. It was about here that the rain started to fall hard, and I sheltered for a while under the trees that can be seen in the distance.
With the rain showing no sign of stopping, I made the decision to carry on and hope that my waterproofs would keep me dryish. The path leads over a muddy area, before arriving at a gate and starting the descent down the side of the mountain.
The path is pretty much just mud and grass here (mainly mud with the rain at the time), and carries on through small dips, in a generally downwards direction, until eventually, the farm buildings at Ober Saum come into view. We continue on down the grass and mud track until we reach the buildings.
